Message: I'm in need of advice on teaching my son to hold a crayon or pencil correctly. He enjoys drawing and colouring in, but has very little control as he doesn't hold the pencil very firmly with nothing like the correct grip. I don't know whether to try to encourage him to do so, or just leave it for when he starts school.

Message: You do not say how old your child is. pencil control is best developed through many ways, chalking, drawing in sand and all fine motor activities to help develop the muscles and dexterity required. Hexagonal or tripod grip pencils also help. If your child is 3-4 you could try placing a pencil down on the table point towards child, then pick pencil up between thumb and first finger, flip pencil over and the correct grip should be in place!! try yourself. I hesitate a little because some children find this a problem and you should not force a child, it should be done for fun, pleasure etc. otherwise leave till school and concentrate on fine motor development hope this helps! I keep answering mail, i am an early years teacher and cannot help myself!!
