I am rather concerned that my son is now almost five and he still insists on having a dummy and cloth at bed time. We almost got him to give the dummy up but then we had a new baby daughter and he saw that she had one and decided to keep his. I am not worried so much about the cloth, but should I be hard and just insist he gives up the dummy?

I found with two children that they gave up their dummies in their own time. I see no harm in a child having a dummy for sleep and the longer they have it the more comfort they are storing up so that they will not need a substitute (e.g. thumb) when the dummy finally goes. I should not worry at all, as one night the dummy by accident will not be there and hey presto - it will not be needed again. Take a relaxed attitude to it and you will find it will go of its own accord. Good luck.

We found that the worse thing about giving our baby son a dummy at night was the fact that he was continually losing it. That was until we realised that you can buy dummy straps to tie them to their babygrow. Knowledge is a wonderful thing. Also, thank you childcare index for this new chat room, it's a really exellent idea.
